DOMS
Delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is the muscle pain/soreness/stiffness you experience a day or two after unusual exertion or any movement you aren’t used to. DOMS is most frequently felt when you begin a new exercise program, change your exercise routine, or dramatically increase the duration or intensity of your exercise routine and it can be alarming for individuals new to exercise.
So today’s miracle cure to DOMS is watermelon juice.
Watermelon Juice
Watermelon juice is naturally rich in the amino acid L-Citrulluine (it also occurs in other melons, squashes, cucumbers and pumpkins).
L-Citrulluine
There’s been little previous interest in L-Citrulluine as it’s a non-protein amino acid previously only viewed as an amino acid used in metabolic processes within the urea cycle. But research found that L-Citrullines antioxidant properties and the ability to generate nitric oxide can also help treat hypertension, heart failure and atherosclerosis.
Specific to athletes, research also shows improvements in performance due to nitric oxide synthesis and better glucose transport in skeletal muscle.
However, within this study, performance wasn’t significantly improved. But muscle soreness 24 hours after exercise was significantly less in the groups who had drank both natural watermelon juice and enriched watermelon juice compared to the placebo group.
